THERE WAS PLENTY more cut-ass for the PNM in the local government elections held in Trinidad & Tobago yesterday. If the Parliamentary PNM had become a 12-seater maxi under Mr Manning, the local government PNM under Mr Rowley is down to two wheels, with one cyclist and one person on the cross- and handlebar respectively. How much licks can one party take?
This calls to mind Michael Harris’ excellent column written
earlier this year in which he pointed out there were three PNMs, the Manning-PNM comprising a few hundred with their noses deep in the trough, the tribal PNM which would mark their X on the balisier no matter how they fared themselves and the educated PNM, the PNM citizen, the theatre-goer, the reader, the art-buyer, the people who put the “Movement” in the People’s National Movement. (I’m giving my impression of Harris’ column here.)
After watching Mr Rowley’s less-than-gracious concession speech (which ended with a turn on the heels and a swift departure), I thought to myself, the citizen PNM deserves better.

He gave the impression of a private citizen being hounded by paparazzi as opposed to the leader of a (once?) major political party - reminiscent of one Jack under pressure from questioning at the airport - all the way to his car! I caught a clip on TV where Dr. Rowley was speaking with some folks with mikes (cyah call dem "journalists") - surely this is not the "concession speech" you're referring to? The exchange was gruff and abrupt. He gave the impression of a private citizen being hounded by paparazzi as opposed to the leader of a (once?) major political party - reminiscent of one Jack under pressure from questioning at the airport - all the way to his car! Ill-tempered and churlish!
I actually feel a little sad for Dr. Rowley. He appears to be a man who has difficulty being gracious. A man who finds (resounding)public defeat utterly unpalatable. Mr. Manning has perhaps denied Dr. Rowley his aspired destiny. Indeed, if the PP can arrange for its ministers and spokespersons to obtain some polish and finishing, and if they can conspire to stop shooting themselves in the feet and alienating the same folks who voted for them, then Dr. Rowley might find himself in Mr Panday's former position of being one of the major factors maintaining a political opponent's popularity. Unless he can change his public persona and learn to attack with finesse and take licks like a man, he will never beat Kamla. Alternatively, he could just shut up and wait for Ramlogan, Warner, Rambachan or Baptiste-Cornelis to show us the soft underbelly (a veritable "jellybelly") of the PP.
