DESPITE MY PROFESSED contempt for Twenty-20 cricket, I watch it more often than I’d like to admit – and have seen both Trinidad & Tobago games played in the Caribbean T/20 so far. Of course, the same reason I hate it is the reason I like it: it’s crap – but it can be very, very exciting crap.
Last night, for instance, the Leeward Islands did everything right to win the game, dominating very ordinary TT bowling
with the bat to post what ought to have been the match-winning score of 161. Kieron Pollard, masquerading as an all-rounder, sent down a contender for the Most Indifferent Over of All Time, which went for 25. “He better make up with the bat for that rubbish he did with the ball,” my friend Debbie remarked.
He did. The Leeward Islands were on top of 36 of the 39 overs played in last night’s game – but it took only three overs for Kieron Pollard to smash the game out of their reach. Trinidad & Tobago won with an over to spare – but it really was a case of Leeward Islands, 0, Kieron Pollard, 1.
